This is an early example of an Australian made brooch, circa 1865 and containing a large cabochon piece of malachite in 18 carat (tested) gold frame.
The work is typical of Australian Jewellery Firms of that period, notably Lamborn and Wagner and both Wendt and Steiner. Malachite was found at Burra in S.A. in the mid 1850s and these type of fashionable pieces were formed in the years just afterwards.
A rare and desirable piece of early colonial Australian Jewellery.
